CHURCH PLANTING IN AFRICA

Pastor Goft joined the pastoral team of the youth ministry in Hope of Bangkok church seven years ago after he graduated with a Masters degree in economics. Pastor Goft and Pastor Mom got married in February 2007. Together, they oversee a Hope centre in Bangkok with 700 people. The centre has grown over the years through continue spiritual support and guidance from Ps PN and Ps Sunee. The centre consists of people from the high school students group, university group and young professionals group. The members in the centre serve God with unity, vision and biblical values.

Pastor Goft shared how God called him to church planting in Africa and his recent mission trip to Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, Togo, Benin and Nigeria.

Prophetic Words to Africa

One Sunday morning, before Rev. Cindy Jacob was due to come to visit our Hope Church, I was seeking God during my quiet time and He reminded me the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth, who was barren for such a long time. The angel appeared to him and told him that Elizabeth’s barrenness would soon be over. Zechariah lacked faith but God strengthened him to have faith that God would bring it all to pass. I decided to receive this as a specific prophesy for me.

During the service, Rev. Cindy Jacobs prophesised that God wanted me to be blessing to many nations. At that time I have to say that I doubted but I believe that whatever comes from God, He will make it come to pass.

Actually, my English isn’t that good, and I still struggle with understanding with the cultural differences from other nations. However, God stirred in my heart about this all the time.

Two years later, Ps PN and Ps. Prapob have come to talk to me. They assigned me the Ministry of West Africa.

I started to feel God’s promise coming to pass, but deep inside, I still feared. God really understood my feelings and He reassured me a few days later through Peter Truong, a servant of God from Australia. Peter came to Thailand and he prophesied that God will use me in World Mission. He will support me and He will give me confidence. Peace came into my heart. Although I don’t have many abilities, when God calls, He will support me and make it happen.

Missions Trip to six african countries

In this trip, I went to visit six different countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, Togo, Benin and Nigeria. People in these countries responded positively to God.

I was travelling with Ps. Prapop, and he impressed me very much. He has just recovered from a stroke, causing one side of his body to be paralysed. However he is well by the grace of God. Ps Prapop is supposed to be in a proper and comfortable place, but he decided to visit the people in Africa. For someone his age, it’s not an easy thing to do.

We met many people in Africa who are so different from us in many things. We’ve seen a few rich people but most are the poor and needy. They are well acquainted with difficulties and hardships. They live without knowing the purpose of their lives. The cost of living is very high. The salary is only around 500-1500 baht. Physically, they face many difficulties. It’s the complete opposite spiritually! I found that people there responded quite positively to God. They have a heart for God, no matter how poor they are. Every early Sunday morning, they will put on their best clothing to worship God at church. We see the encouraging Christian words on the car windows like “In God we trust” and “God can make a way”. God is good in using the roadside signs to encourage those who pass by. They have hearts that seeks God. This is contrary to all the hardships they are facing.

Hope Liberia Church planting

In Liberia, there was a very long and protracted civil war, killing millions. The quality of living is very poor. They don’t have electricity or water supply. They need to generate their own electricity at night. The cost of living is very high. There are only a few kilometres of proper paved roads in Liberia – most roads are made of rock. The houses are made of bricks and clay. They really live in poverty and hardship. But the difference is in their hearts; hearts that seek God.

The work of our Hope family started a year ago by our Liberian brother from Hope Adelaide, Australia. He returned home to Liberia and shared stories about the Hope churches globally to a pastor named Sunny Brown. Sunny decided to join the vision of our Hope family and started our church there. He was a former pastor in a refugee camp during the civil war. It has been a year since he’d started our Hope Church. The work of God there has grown rapidly in the past year. Our church has expanded from a few people to 130 people and we’ve started a second and third church. While we were there, we had the privilege of opening the fourth church.

Today there are around 400-500 brothers and sisters in Hope Liberia; and this is only after one year.

Hope Ethiopia: Pioneering Christian Businesses

In Ethiopia, our work was started by Thai people who went to evangelise to the Ethiopian expatriates who lived in Thailand. We invited them to join our church in Bangkok. At Hope Bangkok, they grew in Christ, returned home and started our ministry there. A while after our church was planted; we sent several of our people to start a business over there to support our ministry. Other aims were to lay a foundation of faith and impart the spirit of Hope to the people. Today they are six Thai people living in Ethiopia. These people were willing to leave their home country to live in another country where comfort and convenience is difficult to find.

We started a Thai restaurant there, as well as a SPA business. We also started a different kind of service where people from Africa are transported to hospitals in Thailand.

Now there are around 130 local people attending the service at our church. Ps Wichin and Sister Tira are our main leaders, after both decided to serve God in Ethiopia.

The ministry there is advancing due to the commitment of our brothers and sisters. The Thai team are impressed with what the Thai leaders have done in serving God in a country where different languages are spoken. We have seen the works of the Holy Spirit there and we decided that we will lay a foundation for the orphans and the homeless children there. There are many homeless children, and when we help them with their physical needs, it may even draw them wanting to know the Lord. God’s ministry in Ethiopia has been balanced both physically and spiritually.

Hope Ghana: The harvest is ripe

In Ghana, the Hope church has been started by our brothers and sisters who went back home. They invited their Christian friends to form a group there. Today there are around 50 people attending the service at the Elementary School. In Ghana, peoples’ hearts are ripe, hearts that seek God. Churches have sprung up like mushrooms. We saw many new churches along the street. At present, we have opened our churches in two cities one: in the capital city Accra, and the other in Kumasi.

Our leader Ps Paul has been working vigorously, bring many care groups from the various communities.

Hope Togo: A growing church

In Togo, our leader Ps Gauze has a pioneering spirit. He loves the pioneering work. He has helped us plant the church in Benin too.

In this country, we have started laying down the foundations for the past year. We started with four people, and at the moment, we have around 50 people and our own building. Our brothers and sisters have joined hand in head in offering to build the church. They have the Hope spirit; they watched the VCD of Hope church. They want to fellowship with us in Thailand and all the Hope churches around the world.

They hope to plant a Hope church in Nigeria and in Burkina Faso in the next few years too.

Africa is continents where there are many people seeking God and it is a continent on which God’s favour lies. I do believe that God is now doing His great miracles in this continent, together with all the Christians in the world.
