DEBT RETIREMENT MINISTRY

The Breakthrough campaign which started on the 1 August 2005 ended on 30 April 2007 with an outpouring of thanksgiving. At the campaign launch on 17th July 2005, we each were given a mustard seed by Pastor Dinah to remind us to see things from God's perspective and with eyes of faith. At the end of the campaign, we each were given a Breakthrough fridge magnet as a memorial of the works of God in and through us.

Purpose of the campaign

The campaign was launched primarily with three objectives:

  1. Raise the faith level of the church
  2. Retire capital debt
  3. Resource new ministry & mission causes

At the start of the campaign, we had capital debt of $5.5m and were repaying installments $45K monthly! With the campaign centred around faith, we wanted to see our faith being strengthened so that we will learn to trust God more in overcoming challenges, resolving conflicts and to take bolder steps to serve Him in greater measures. We also wanted very much to see a debt free church, and from there, more of our resources being channeled into missions and community work so that as a church, we will touch more lives.

Today, that possibly became a reality. We dared to imagine, today our hearts are filled with thanksgiving at the awesomeness of God and His works in our congregation.

How it was conducted

Focus/objectives

This low key, high impact campaign was not intended to overshadow other ministry focuses like local community ministry and global church planting efforts. Yet we anticipated transformed lives, believing that our God is able to do immeasurably much more than all we could ask. Daring to imagine, we witnessed growth not just in the financial terms, but also in the faith level of the people.

Strategies employed

This campaign was communicated and reinforced in different ways. From worship services (milestone celebrations in February 2006, September 2006 and thanksgiving service in May 2007), to communications channels like campaign newsletters, church bulletins, campaign website, announcements, video testimonies, live testimonies during worship services, even a very visual and graphical chart displayed on the stage.

For instance, regular updates of the amount raised (and shortfall) were provided to the church in the church bulletins. This has proven to be a quick way to reach masses.

Members and visitors were also involved in more than just giving. Having experienced personal breakthroughs first hand themselves, members testified in worship services and small groups of what God has done in their lives.

Generous giving of the members

In conclusion, we are tremendously grateful to witness God’s faithfulness in our church. The last day of the campaign was 30th April 2007.Campaign giving exceeded our target by $61K. The same day also marked 11 years for Pastor Ben & Dinah serving as our Senior Pastor. One date and two milestones!

As of today, we have a campaign surplus of $98K. This amount and further giving in fulfillment of pledges will be channeled to a reserve fund for future church growth.
