MAKING DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS BY PASTOR SIMON ENG

Dear brothers and sisters,

I want to share with you one of our heart burdens which is also a core value of our Hope God churches: the (mentoring) shepherding system. It’s a one on one session where a mentor ‘shepherd’ meets with a member (the ‘sheep’) to watch over and care for the sheep and mentors that sheep. It’s a very essential practice and is crucial to our churches in the Hope of God movement.

One on One Discipleship

Through the shepherding system, we try, as much as possible; to follow what Jesus said in John 10, “I’m a good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life, the good shepherd leads his sheep, the good shepherd knows his sheep”.

It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Eph 4:11-13

Pastor Simon Eng Video Message

We aim to be holistic when we shepherd our people. This means that we not only look after our sheep’s spiritual life or care for them when they are in church, but we care for them in their ministry, job etc.

We try to mentor them, help them develop in their natural, spiritual, emotional, mental areas etc.

We try to do this because it is a personal way to really help our people to grow; it’s a very important area.

Heart to Heart Care

I have been a sheep and I have been a mentor (shepherd) for 16 of my 17 years at Hope. And I found that every time we devote personal care to anyone at all whether it’s a member or a leader, you will find tremendous significant development in the individual. If we exercise the care, take the time, you will see the person develop.

I believe in this system with all my heart, I believe in heart to heart care, one to one care that we should be giving to our members.

Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. Acts 20:28

Transformation through discipleship

I want to encourage you and exalt you, it takes time, it takes effort, it takes a lot of work, it’s not easy at times, it requires us to stretch us beyond our capacity to really love our mentoree (sheep). However after one year, two years, three years and beyond, you’re going to see a difference.

You’re going to see people change. Their lives will be changed, their understanding of God will change, their ministry will grow; you’ll be able to help them in a very significant way through one on one (mentoring) shepherding.

Building biblical people

Brothers and sisters, I really want to encourage you not to forget this core value of shepherding; giving our people one on one mentoring (shepherding) is a valuable aspect of our movement. I really want to encourage you to read Ezekiel and Jeremiah: both taught about it. In the New Testament, Jesus taught about it. People went around, caring for the leaders, bringing their disciples along with them.

It’s a wonderful effective system of caring for our people and developing our churches. Do it brothers and sisters, it’s gonna be a wonderful blessing for your church.

Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; 1 Peter 5:2

God bless you all!
